Application: Discussion

Start by taking some time to reflect on what right livelihood means to you, and what it means to incorporate it into your work.

Next, conduct research – in your geographic area and beyond – of agricultural businesses that incorporate ‘right livelihoods’ into their work. That is, can you find agricultural businesses that openly share their values? Make a list of these businesses by documenting the following information:

  • Business name,
  • location,
  • agricultural product(s) sold,
  • shared values,
  • shared strategies for honoring those values.

Based on your list, identify one that most inspires you based on their approach to honoring their values and the apparent success of their business. Note that we specify apparent success, because there are specific metrics, based on a specific business plan, that would define their success. However, this information is not always easy to find without an interview or detailed view of financial reports.

Then, in the comments section below, share some of your initial reflections on the meaning and role of right livelihood. Then share a bit about the business you chose and why they inspire you. When you’re done, review and respond to at least two others’ posts, if there are some.
